We hebben in Nederland zes erefuncties in de culturele sector, en wel in de disciplines componeren, dichten, fotograferen, denken, stripmaken en theologie. Wie deze functie bekleedt heeft de taak om als ambassadeur van zijn/haar ambt in de publieke ruimte op te treden. Tot op heden werden zij de des Vaderlandsen genoemd, maar die naam is niet meer van deze tijd. Deze avond vindt de feestelijke doop plaats van de nieuwe naam!

Carthago is wereldberoemd als tegenstrever van Rome in de oudheid. De stad werd verwoest, weer opgebouwd en blijft tot op de dag van vandaag als rijke maar verdwenen cultuur herinnerd worden. Over deze prachtstad en de herinnering daaraan, tot aan de huidige dag als UNESCO werelderfgoed, gaan we in discussie. De uitreiking van de negende J.M.A. Biesheuvelprijs voor de beste verhalenbundel van de afgelopen twee jaar, 2023 en 2024, vindt plaats tijdens de Week van het Korte Verhaal. Tijdens dit feestelijke programma brengt Manon Uphoff een ode aan het korte verhaal. Journalist en mode-/cultuuractivist Janice Deul studeerde af op het werk van haar stadsgenoot J.M.A. Biesheuvel, zij vertelt over haar bewondering voor de schrijver. Presentatie: Arjen Fortuin.

Reproductieve rechtvaardigheid

Reproductieve rechtvaardigheid is een Zwart feministische term die wereldwijd steeds meer aandacht krijgt binnen zowel activisme als onderzoek. In Nederland is de term nog relatief onbekend. Wereldwijd worden we op dit moment geconfronteerd met reproductief onrecht: met de criminalisering van abortus, hogere moeder- en kind sterftecijfers voor mensen van kleur, en toenemend bewijs voor de structurele aard van obstetrisch geweld en racisme. De investeringen die we doen in vruchtbaarheid en voortplanting zijn ongelijk, met name in (post)koloniale contexten. De term reproductieve rechtvaardigheid probeert al deze verschillende facetten van onrecht in relatie tot vruchtbaarheid samen te nemen. Tijdens deze avond zal een divers panel van academici en verloskundigen het concept van reproductieve rechtvaardigheid introduceren en bespreken, wat er op het spel staat en wat we hiervan kunnen leren.

Mapping the Erasure

Human geographer Hashem Abushama sheds his light on the significance of understanding the multiple Palestinian spatial realities that exist – taking al ‘Arub refugee camp in the West Bank as his starting point. What unfolds is a geography prone to rupture and transformation. Abushama will introduce the notion and practice of “countermaps” – a map creation process which challenges the maps produced by states. He explores the ways in which counter-mapping can bring into focus the contingent and differentiated nature of settler colonial dispossession and fragmentation, as well as the embodied, spatial practices and processes of Palestinian return and freedom.

Hoe verwarrender onze wereld wordt, des te groter het verlangen naar richting. En dat is precies wat Gabriël van den Brink in zijn nieuwe boek ‘De actualiteit van het archaïsche’ over de menselijke evolutie betoogt. Met een magistrale blik overziet hij in vele vormen van menselijk handelen, te beginnen bij lichamelijke, zoals voeden, vechten en zich voortplanten, die we met andere primaten gemeen hebben, tot meer geestelijke, zoals spreken, geloven en schilderen, die alleen bij mensen voorkomen. Spyware companies sell digital intelligence tools to anyone who can afford them. This new reality—where unregulated technology has become a forceful instrument for autocrats around the world—is terrible news for democracies and citizens.

In overzichtswerken van de antieke filosofie kom je nauwelijks vrouwen tegen. Dat is iets van recente datum: lange tijd hebben vrouwelijke antiek-Griekse denkers tot de filosofische canon behoord, maar vanaf omstreeks 1800 worden ze niet meer besproken. Samen met Mieke de Vos en Michiel Leezenberg keren we terug naar de vrouwelijke Griekse filosofen en wat er van hun werk is nagebleven.
