Nagarjuna wordt algemeen beschouwd als de belangrijkste boeddhistische denker na de Boeddha zelf. In zijn hoofdwerk, Basisverzen van het middenpad, herdefinieert hij de boeddhistische notie van leegte. De verfijning en diepgang van dit boek hebben niet alleen generaties van latere boeddhisten beziggehouden, maar vormen ook voor hedendaagse filosofen nog een bron van inspiratie.
