Queerness, Spirituality and Decoloniality in the Indonesian Archipelago

This Spring, SPUI25 in Spe collaborates with De Nieuwe Kerk on the occasion of the latter’s Grote Indonesië Tentoonstelling. During two events, various guest speakers explore pre-colonial, contemporary and decolonial perspectives on Queerness. Following the exhibition and panel discussion hosted by De Nieuwe Kerk, this second edition in SPUI25 revolves around a special film screening of the Indonesian Queer film Dear to Me (2020) by Monica Vanesa Tedja.

Meer creatief talent op haar podium, met deze ambitie richtte SPUI25 begin 2024 het Madame de Staëlfonds op, genoemd naar de vooruitstrevende Frans-Zwitserse schrijver, essayist en filosoof die invloedrijke literaire salons bestierde in Parijs en het Zwitserse Coppet. Vanmiddag lanceren wij dit fonds tijdens ‘De literaire salon 2.0’. Met bijdragen van: Maarten Asscher, Margot Dijkgraaf, Marita Mathijsen, Peter-Paul Verbeek en Nadia de Vries.

Japanse filosofie: de denkweg van verfijning en verbinding

Sushi, manga, karaoke, judoscholen en Toyota’s: Japan is niet meer weg te denken uit het Nederlandse straatbeeld. Ondertussen genieten we in musea van verfijnde blokdrukkunst uit Tokyo en liggen de boekhandels vol vertaalde literatuur uit het ‘land van de rijzende zon’. De auteur leeft: Hannes Meinkema!

In november 2022 overleed schrijver, dichter en literatuurwetenschapper Hannes Meinkema, waarna haar feministische cultroman En dan is er koffie (1976) snel herdrukt werd. Ze schreef echter heel veel meer: romans, essays, poëzie, thrillers, en met Ethel Portnoy richtte ze in 1978 het tijdschrift Chrysallis op, waar vrouwelijke auteurs voorrang genoten. Tijdens De auteur leeft: Hannes Meinkema! gaan liefhebbers en kenners van Meinkema’s werk met elkaar in gesprek over wat haar werk zo goed maakt en waarom het gelezen dient te worden.

Unboxing Gaza: Disrupted Histories and Photo Kegham

Kegham Djeghalian Sr founded the first photography studio of Gaza. Focusing on the legacy of this exceptional photographer, Özge Calafato and Karène Sanchez Summerer will be in discussion with his grandson, Kegham Djeghalian Jr, who works on activating the surviving fraction of his grandfather’s endangered archive. The talk will address the significance of preserving Gaza’s precarious visual history and cultural heritage in the light of the current critical crisis of Gaza.

The Unmarked Burial Sites in Lebanon

The Soil and the Sea

In Lebanon there are more than 100 untouched mass graves dating back from the Civil War, and thousands of families awaiting a missing relative or at least a bone to bury. The documentary The Soil and the Sea unveils the violence lying beneath a garden, a school, a cafe, a hotel, and other unremarkable landscapes. As the camera interrogates these everyday spaces, voices fill them with erased stories. After screening the documentary, we will have a discussion with film director Daniele Rugo, Yara El Murr and Eleri Connick.

In haar boek Anders dan de anderen laat emeritus hoogleraar Mary Kemperink zien hoe er in West-Europa vanaf de negentiende eeuw een beeld ontstond van homoseksualiteit als een bijzondere identiteit: homoseksuele mannen en vrouwen waren ‘anders’ dan ‘gewone’ mensen. Met dit beeld waren allerlei stereotypen en vooroordelen gemoeid, waarvan vele doorwerken tot op de dag van vandaag.

De auteur leeft: Renate Dorrestein

Renate Dorrestein (1954-2018) was een prominente Nederlandse schrijver, journalist en feminist. Op haar debuut Buitenstaanders (1983) volgde een lange reeks stuk voor stuk veelgelezen romans, verhalen en essays. Dorrestein schreef over rafelrandjes en taboes, over de strakke maatschappelijke normen waar vooral vrouwen aan moeten voldoen. Tijdens De auteur leeft: Renate Dorrestein gaan liefhebbers en kenners van Dorresteins werk met elkaar in gesprek over wat haar goed zo goed maakt en waarom haar werk sinds de jaren tachtig inspireert.
