Academische perspectieven en alledaagse ervaringen van activisten

De drijvende krachten achter sociale verandering

De wereld is de afgelopen jaren getuige van een heropleving van activisme, gedreven door sociale rechtvaardigheid, antiracisme, klimaatverandering, dekolonisatie en politiek wantrouwen. Met als doel: sociale verandering en vooruitgang. De drijvende krachten hierachter zijn veelal niet-gezaghebbende entiteiten, “gewone” mensen die strijden voor gelijkheid, rechtvaardigheid en solidariteit. De verhalen en inzet van deze mensen blijven vaak onderbelicht in de geschiedschrijving en publieke opinie. Of de activisten worden afgeschilderd als ‘extreem’ of ‘polariserend’, waardoor zij steeds vaker te maken krijgen met excessief politiegeweld. Om de obscuriteit rond het wezen en de handelingen van activisten te verhelderen, richt SPUI25 in Spe zich op hun verhaal.

This evening Claudia López, the first woman elected mayor of Bogotá, and an expert on violence in Colombia, will reflect on the persistence of violence, its connection to the war on drugs, and the peace process. Juan Masullo, an expert on civilian resistance to armed groups and the influence of the war on drugs in Latin America, will contribute insights from academia. Postmortem Privacy

In 1903, a lawyer called W. Archibald McClean predicted that whatever “the future dominion of the right to privacy” would be, it would be built on the premise “that whatever right of privacy an individual has, dies with him or her.” Call this traditional view the “no-privacy-right-for-the-dead” doctrine. In this event, Anita Allen will discuss with other experts how today, a more sustained consideration of postmortem privacy is essential.

‘Thanks, I actually made it myself’: de herwaardering van handwerk en de relatie met activisme

Een draad verbindt, verweeft, verstrikt en verstrengelt zich. Het is materiaal dat talloze mogelijkheden biedt, zowel metaforisch als concreet. Toch is de draad vanuit kunsthistorisch perspectief nooit zo gewaardeerd als olieverf of marmer. Dominante associaties met het medium beperken zich vaak tot het ouderwetse imago van een brave, eenzame bezigheid. Anno 2024 lijkt deze benadering op zijn retour: jongeren, kunstenaars en collectieven omarmen handwerk en transformeren het tot activistische praktijk. Vanavond verkent SPUI25 in Spe dit nieuwe ‘craftivism’.

In dit programma spreken Frans Blom en Vivian Beekman naar aanleiding van hun boek Het land achter de zee over de migratie en detentie van Holocaust-overlevenden vlak na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. In overvolle schepen vertrokken tienduizenden Joden naar Palestina, destijds nog Brits mandaatgebied. Bestempeld als illegale migranten werden velen vlak voor de Palestijnse kust onderschept door Britse oorlogsschepen. De migratie strandde in detentiekampen op het eiland Cyprus. Hoe was het voor deze Joden om na de oorlog weer (of alsnog) jarenlang achter prikkeldraad te worden opgesloten?

From Anthropocene to Symbiocene: Earth Emotions with Glenn Albrecht

In his ground-breaking book Earth Emotions, Glenn Albrecht provides an account of the relationship between the state of the Earth and our mental and emotional states. He argues that in the epoch known as the Anthropocene, we have threatened both the health of the planet and triggered an avalanche of mental and emotional distress on humans and non-humans. During this lecture, Albrecht proposes to supplant anthropocentric living and thinking by symbiocentric alternatives. These can emerge from positive “psychoterratic” states.

We kunnen mensen onrechtvaardig behandelen zonder het te willen, en zelfs zonder het op te merken. Onbewust en ongewild maken we onderscheid tussen personen op basis van hun gender, etniciteit, leeftijd, lichaamsgewicht of seksuele oriëntatie. In haar nieuwe boek onderzoekt Lieke Asma die blinde vlekken. Om deze werkelijk te begrijpen, betoogt zij, is het zaak de blik niet naar binnen te keren, maar onze aandacht te richten naar de wereld buiten ons.

It is tempting to dismiss such statements as an expression of gut feeling, of unthinking xenophobia. But the ideas expressed by Wilders are based on a coherent world view, an ideology. Out of the rubble of World War II and the Holocaust, the Federal Republic of Germany emerged, and with it a foundational myth of the “economic miracle.” In her new book Redeeming Objects. A West German Mythology (University of Wisconsin Press 2023) Natalie Scholz shows how this mythical foundation derived its redemptive qualities from being entangled with Nazi culture. Following the exhibition and panel discussion hosted by De Nieuwe Kerk, this second edition in SPUI25 revolves around a special film screening of the Indonesian Queer film Dear to Me (2020) by Monica Vanesa Tedja.
