Reproductieve rechtvaardigheid

Reproductieve rechtvaardigheid is een Zwart feministische term die wereldwijd steeds meer aandacht krijgt binnen zowel activisme als onderzoek. In Nederland is de term nog relatief onbekend. Wereldwijd worden we op dit moment geconfronteerd met reproductief onrecht: met de criminalisering van abortus, hogere moeder- en kind sterftecijfers voor mensen van kleur, en toenemend bewijs voor de structurele aard van obstetrisch geweld en racisme. De investeringen die we doen in vruchtbaarheid en voortplanting zijn ongelijk, met name in (post)koloniale contexten. De term reproductieve rechtvaardigheid probeert al deze verschillende facetten van onrecht in relatie tot vruchtbaarheid samen te nemen. Tijdens deze avond zal een divers panel van academici en verloskundigen het concept van reproductieve rechtvaardigheid introduceren en bespreken, wat er op het spel staat en wat we hiervan kunnen leren.

Hij voorziet in zijn boek van essentiële kennis en confronteert ons met ontnuchterende lessen over migratie.

‘The family’ in migration politics

Strange(r) Families

“Family” is the main reason why migrants are permitted to move to European countries. But who decides what a ‘proper’ family is? Or what families are ‘deserving’ enough to live here? Families which include “strangers” – meaning non-citizens – require state permission to live together in Europe. For families which are “strange” – who diverge from the norm – such state permission is not self-evident. Same-sex families or polygamous families are commonly denied family migration rights. Who and what states consider “family” is therefore key to defining who gets to legally migrate to and reside in Europe.

Gender en geweld zijn nauw verweven, zoals feministen al sinds jaar en dag signaleren. Toch werden we in 2017 opnieuw wakker geschud door #MeToo en zijn we inmiddels enkele jaren, vele schandalen en dito momenten van publieke verbijstering verder. In Voorbij de verbijstering. Over gender en geweld belichten de redacteuren met bijdragen van journalisten, wetenschappers en kunstenaars de diepe wortels van gendergerelateerd geweld in onze cultuur, en de vele gedaantes die dit kan aannemen. Moderator Ilse Josepha Lazaroms gaat in gesprek met panelsprekers Renée Römkens, Sarah Bracke, Susanne Täuber en Conny Roggeband over de wetenschappelijke kant hiervan: de rol van gendergeweld in de praktijk van de wetenschap.

Een ver-van-mijn-bedshow? Over Virtual Reality en het beïnvloeden van gedrag

Met Virtual Reality kan wat ver weg voelt, heel dichtbij worden gebracht. Bijvoorbeeld de impact die onze consumptie van voedsel en plastic elders in de wereld heeft of in de toekomst. Virtual Reality heeft hierdoor de potentie om de ‘psychologische afstand’ te verkleinen die veel mensen ervaren tot de gevolgen van hun gedrag. Tijdens deze avond laten we zien hoe je met VR duurzaam gedrag kan stimuleren, onder andere door de psychologische afstand te verkleinen.

Rethinking Our News Diet: On Polarisation and Online News Consumption

When talking about polarization, populism, and misinformed publics, we often focus on the role of echo chambers, fake news, and radical rabbit holes on social media. A new project argues this is the wrong focus. Instead, we should turn our eye on our news diet and – specifically – on the alarming lack of quality news in this diet. This lack is a risk to democratic societies because less informed citizens are more susceptible to populist and manipulative messages. Join the presentation of this project and a discussion on how to increase our news exposure.

In het huis waar Milio van de Kamp opgroeit is regelmatig geen licht of warm water. In de buurt waar hij woont is criminaliteit aan de orde van de dag. Toch lukt hem uiteindelijk wat zovelen niet lukt: ontsnappen uit de armoede. Hoewel zijn docent hem adviseert ‘iets lager te mikken’, slaagt hij erin vanuit het vmbo de universiteit te bereiken. Maar de sociale stijging komt niet zonder offers.

Een online wereld vol alternatieve waarheden, politici die regeren via talkshows en persconferenties, marketingmanagers die overal een draai aan geven: we leven in een tijd die wordt gedomineerd door de communicatie. Inhoud is ondergeschikt gemaakt aan vorm, politieke partijen zijn nauwelijks van elkaar te onderscheiden en tegelijkertijd nergens op vast te pinnen, en bij wetenschappers, kunstenaars en schrijvers gaat het niet om wat ze maken of bedenken maar om hoe ze zichzelf weten te profileren en hun waar aan de man brengen. Hoe is die communicatiesamenleving ontstaan – en kunnen we er nog aan ontsnappen?

Cities cover just 2% of the planet’s surface but consume 75% of all the materials and energy worldwide. In 2050, planetary urbanization will demand ten times more materials, water, and energy than today. This is seriously undermining any possibility to halt climate breakdown.
