SPUI25 in Spe is de jongerenredactie van SPUI25. Hierin hebben twintigers met scherpe analyses zitting, die weten wat er onder jongvolwassenen speelt en niet bang zijn om te presenteren, te experimenteren en debatten te leiden.

SPUI25 in Spe is in het voorjaar van 2013 in het leven geroepen met als doel om studenten met een passie voor het bedenken, organiseren en presenteren van academisch-culturele bijeenkomsten de kans te geven bij te dragen aan de programmering van SPUI25. Op die manier kunnen zij ervaring opdoen in de praktijk en zich verder ontwikkelen.

The electoral decline of traditional left-wing parties across Western democracies, fueled by the defection of their historical voter base to the populist Right, paints a bleak picture for progressive politics. The old anchors are slipping, and the Left, long the bearer of emancipatory promises, finds itself disoriented. If the far Right thrives by mobilizing populist rhetoric, could a left variant offer a viable alternative? And if so, what are the costs?

The Birth of the Gender Clinic: One Hundred Years of Gender-affirming Medicine

One hundred years ago, a peculiar institute opened its doors in Berlin; the “Institut für Sexualwissenschaft” (Institute for Sexual Science). First of its kind, this place sought to research and help a range of people who could be characterized as “gender outlaws”. These people, who using the language of today we would call gay, queer, intersex, or trans, found refuge, community, and access to healthcare. Surgical services were, for the first time, offered to people to affirm their gender identity.

In de ‘Manosphere’ komen mannen wereldwijd online samen om hun frustraties over vrouwen en het feminisme te delen. Deze digitale community groeit snel, met een toenemende betrokkenheid van jonge Nederlandse mannen. Waarom voelen steeds meer mannen zich aangetrokken tot deze online gemeenschap? SPUI25 in Spe onderzoekt de gevaren van de ‘Manosphere’ en de beweegredenen van diens aanhangers.

Expect These Symptoms: Delusional FemTech

Your menstruation app is telling you not to panic about being pregnant while your body is telling you otherwise. At the same time, your neighbour might be falsely worrying about a predictive algorithm telling them they have decreased rates of fertility. SPUI25 explores the state of FemTech software and asks whether we should be using these apps, or not.

Het mysterie van de cyclus: van onwetend ongesteld naar baarmoeder bewust

Hoewel de helft van de wereldbevolking direct te maken krijgt met de menstruatiecyclus, bestaat er een gebrek aan kennis en bewustzijn over de cyclus en hoe deze ons leven beïnvloedt. SPUI25 in Spe verkent het mysterie van de cyclus en weerlegt mythes over de menstruatie en menopauze, op weg van onwetend ongesteld naar baarmoeder bewust!

Summer of Algorithmic Love

Are we approaching a summer of algorithmic love? Developments in romantic matchmaking are being fueled by the mundane practice of swiping upon potential partners on dating apps. These apps appear to feed us recommendations of possible lovers, but we are going to dive a level deeper and ask how these recommendations actually interact with our romantic and sexual preferences.

Academische perspectieven en alledaagse ervaringen van activisten

De drijvende krachten achter sociale verandering

De wereld is de afgelopen jaren getuige van een heropleving van activisme, gedreven door sociale rechtvaardigheid, antiracisme, klimaatverandering, dekolonisatie en politiek wantrouwen. Met als doel: sociale verandering en vooruitgang. De drijvende krachten hierachter zijn veelal niet-gezaghebbende entiteiten, “gewone” mensen die strijden voor gelijkheid, rechtvaardigheid en solidariteit. De verhalen en inzet van deze mensen blijven vaak onderbelicht in de geschiedschrijving en publieke opinie. Of de activisten worden afgeschilderd als ‘extreem’ of ‘polariserend’, waardoor zij steeds vaker te maken krijgen met excessief politiegeweld. Om de obscuriteit rond het wezen en de handelingen van activisten te verhelderen, richt SPUI25 in Spe zich op hun verhaal.

‘Thanks, I actually made it myself’: de herwaardering van handwerk en de relatie met activisme

Een draad verbindt, verweeft, verstrikt en verstrengelt zich. Het is materiaal dat talloze mogelijkheden biedt, zowel metaforisch als concreet. Toch is de draad vanuit kunsthistorisch perspectief nooit zo gewaardeerd als olieverf of marmer. Dominante associaties met het medium beperken zich vaak tot het ouderwetse imago van een brave, eenzame bezigheid. Anno 2024 lijkt deze benadering op zijn retour: jongeren, kunstenaars en collectieven omarmen handwerk en transformeren het tot activistische praktijk. Vanavond verkent SPUI25 in Spe dit nieuwe ‘craftivism’.

Queerness, Spirituality and Decoloniality in the Indonesian Archipelago

This Spring, SPUI25 in Spe collaborates with De Nieuwe Kerk on the occasion of the latter’s Grote Indonesië Tentoonstelling. During two events, various guest speakers explore pre-colonial, contemporary and decolonial perspectives on Queerness. Following the exhibition and panel discussion hosted by De Nieuwe Kerk, this second edition in SPUI25 revolves around a special film screening of the Indonesian Queer film Dear to Me (2020) by Monica Vanesa Tedja.
