A seeming explosion of support for right-wing populist parties has triggered widespread fears that liberal democracy is facing its worst crisis since the 1930s. In his book Democracy Erodes from the Top, Larry Bartels reveals that the real crisis stems not from an increasingly populist public but from political leaders who exploit or mismanage the chronic vulnerabilities of democracy. In 1995 breekt de dan 33-jarige schrijver in één klap door met de roman De eeuwige jachtvelden. Na nog twee korte prozawerken wordt het stil rondom Tepper. In 2012 overlijdt hij. Tijdens De auteur leeft: Nanne Tepper! gaan liefhebbers en kenners van Teppers werk met elkaar in gesprek over wat zijn werk zo goed maakt en waarom het gelezen dient te worden.

De Rapaille Partijen. Antipolitieke sentimenten 1918-1931

Het provocerende optreden van de verschillende Rapaille Partijen in het interbellum vormt een uniek verschijnsel in de Nederlandse politieke geschiedenis. Op basis van uitvoerig bronnenonderzoek beschrijft Robin te Slaa in zijn nieuwe boek de rumoerige geschiedenis van de oorspronkelijke Rapaille Partij en haar navolgers. Hij onderzoekt de uiteenlopende invloeden hierop, zoals anarchisme, dadaïsme, futurisme en fascisme. Vanavond gaat hij over zijn bevindingen in gesprek.

Tijdens dit programma geeft Christina Morina een lezing naar aanleiding van haar nieuwe boek Tausend Aufbrüche: een onderzoek naar de ideeën over democratie en het zelfbeeld van burgers in Oost- en in West-Duitsland. Door haar studie van de democratie van onderaf vermijdt ze niet alleen bestaande clichés, maar trekt ze ook lijnen door naar het hedendaagse rechtspopulisme.
