Karol Beffa

Gedurende het seizoen 2017-2018 organiseert L’Institut Français i.s.m. Athenaeum Boekhandel bij SPUI25 ontmoetingen met schrijvers uit diverse categorieën, allen vertegenwoordigers van de bruisende literaire wereld in het Frankrijk van vandaag. Deze keer te gast bij Olivier Barrot: Karol Beffa

Over de spreker

Het is niet overdreven om Karol Beffa (44) hoogbegaafd te noemen. Als kind vertolkte hij in een beroemde tv-serie de rol van de jonge Mozart, met 14 jaar wordt hij toegelaten op het Conservatorium (waar hij uitblinkt), studeert aan de Ecole Normale Supérieure en in Cambridge, geeft les aan de Polytechnique en het Collège de France. Als pianist begeleidt hij live voorstellingen van stomme films en tekstlezingen (Toni Morrison, Daniel Pennac). Als bekroond componist laat hij zich inspireren door dichters (Baudelaire) en maakt werk dat overal gespeeld wordt (London Symphony Orchestre, Orchestre de Paris). Hij geeft ook les over compositieleer. Daarnaast is hij auteur en schreef hij de biografie van György Ligeti, uitgegeven samen met Cédric Villani onder de titel Les coulisses de la création.

Waarom nog – of juist nu – Céline lezen?

Op 4 augustus 2021 werd bekend dat er vier tot dan toe onbekende manuscripten van Louis-Ferdinand Céline waren teruggevonden. Komende jaren verschijnen alle vier in vertaling. Bij de verschijning van het eerste werk, Oorlog, gaat vertaler Rokus Hofstede met criticus Arnold Heumakers in gesprek over het belang van de omstreden schrijver Céline. Zij onderzoeken onder leiding van moderator Margot Dijkgraaf zijn antisemitisme, zijn relatie tot oorlog, zijn mensbeeld en literatuuropvatting, en waarom we nu nog – of juist nu – Céline zouden moeten lezen.

Sonic Objects of Desire?

In contemporary culture, outdated ideas persist about sound media, such as radio, as being for the ears only. Yet sound media cultures have also variously engaged vision, touch, smell, and taste. This event will focus on the cross-sensory and material qualities of sound media by a double book launch of new books in Media Studies by Carolyn Birdsall and Elodie A. Roy.

The Power of the Sun: Solar Imaginations

How was the Sun conceived and visualized throughout the centuries? And what challenges featuring the Source of Life will we face in the near future? The Power of the Sun brings together literary scholars, astronomers, designers and climate scientists to illuminate our cultural histories and imagine new solar futures. Due to the current climate crisis, diverging conceptions of Sun and its relation to our existence have come into being. What is the future of our dealings with the Sun, and, taking into account climate catastrophe and increasing inequality, what kind of transitions are needed to create a more democratic use of solar power? How do we retain our place under the Sun?
