Een avond met Mary Beard

De bekende emeritus-hoogleraar en auteur Mary Beard gaat deze avond in gesprek met filosoof Tinneke Beeckman over de heersers van het Romeinse Rijk. Wat deden zij, en waarom? En waarom worden er over hen zulke buitenissige en soms ook lugubere verhalen verteld?

In het gesprek gaan Mary Beard en Tinneke Beeckman dieper in op grote thema’s uit de Klassieke Oudheid en nu, zoals macht, corruptie en samenzwering. Maar ook zal er gekeken worden naar het dagelijks leven van de Romeinen. Wat aten ze, en waar? Met wie gingen ze naar bed? En hoe werd het keizerrijk werkelijk bestuurd? Na het interview is er gelegenheid voor het publiek om vragen te stellen.

Over de sprekers

Mary Beard is een van de bekendste classici ter wereld. Ze is emeritus hoogleraar aan de universiteit van Cambridge, met het Oude Rome als specialisme, maar ze schreef ook Vrouwen en macht. Bij Uitgeverij Athenaeum verschenen verder onder meer SPQR, Pompeii en Twaalf keizers.

Tinneke Beeckman studeerde moraalwetenschappen en filosofie aan de VUB en de ULB. Ze publiceerde het bekroonde Door Spinoza’s lens (2012) en Macht en onmacht. Een verkenning van de hedendaagse aanslag op de Verlichting (2015). Ze is columniste van De Standaard en schreef een reeks filosofische vragen voor Knack Magazine.

Hunger extends beyond physical sustenance, encompassing moral, emotional, sensorial, and political dimensions. Taking World War II, contemporary Gaza, Sudan, and South Sudan as examples, our expert panel will explore the weaponisation of hunger in its historical, social, economic and political contexts.
