Mental health in the digital age
Media as “Pharmakon”

Are digital media like narcotic drugs? Such comparisons have become increasingly common in the rampant discussion on smartphone and technology addiction. In his book ‘Plato’s Pharmacy’ (1968) philosopher Jacques Derrida discusses the ambiguity of the “pharmakon”, designating both poison and medicine, depending on context and individual differences. Can our contemporary media be seen as pharmaka for our mental health? For the 5th session of the “SAY AAHH!” series Amir Vudka, Patricia Pisters and Marlies Brouwer will discuss their ongoing work on this topic.

Reflections on 'The Cambridge Grammar of Classical Greek'
Voices

The Cambridge Grammar of Classical Greek is the first comprehensive reference grammar of the language of classical Greece to appear in a century. It benefits from the major advances that have been made in areas like general, comparative and historical linguistics, and provides an up-to-date and detailed description of a language that is famous as well as notorious for its complexity and subtlety.

Adapt or die?
The future of scientific education

With the respectable age of 387 years, the UvA is one of the oldest universities in the Netherlands. It is hard to fathom we may have reached the end of the centuries-old model of a standard curriculum, yet many believe we do. What could be the answer to modern society’s questions to education?

Post-mortem and future prospects
After Brexit?

On 29 March 2019, the United Kingdom was scheduled to leave the European Union. The EU has granted the UK an extension until 22 May, with a decision due by 12 April. Yet less than a month from this deadline, the outcome and modalities of the UK’s departure are more uncertain than ever. No Deal, Theresa May’s Deal, Common Market 2.0, a second referendum and other pathways to No Brexit are all swirling through the British public and parliamentary debate. And whatever may be decided by 12 April, the future political and economic relationship between the UK and the EU will remain highly indeterminate.

An analysis of a political accident
Brexit

Brexit has morphed into a political spectacle of immense proportions. This raises a number of obvious questions: what is acutely happening in the mother of all parliaments, why is the political elite incapable of agreeing on anything, why all the lying, why all this talk of betrayal of the electorate, what explains this total and utter complete mess?

A talk with David Wallace-Wells
The Uninhabitable Earth

David Wallace-Wells does not call himself a climate activist, nor even a lover of nature. He lived his life in the complacency that most inhabitants of the Western world share. Until he started collecting stories of climate change: ‘a group of Arctic scientists trapped when melting ice isolated them on an island populated also by a group of polar bears; a Russian boy killed by anthrax released from a thawing reindeer carcass, trapped in permafrost for many decades.’ If they sound like hyperbolic visions of a biblical apocalypse, Wallace-Wells argues in his much-acclaimed The Uninhabitable Earth, that’s because we are generating one, at full speed.
