Memes can have a tangible impact on the society we live in and could help create a future we would want. Join us for the launch of the Critical Meme Reader III: Breaking the Meme, edited by Chloë Arkenbout and Idil Galip.

Co-Creation with AI

AI technologies have been around for a long time, but it is only recently that we’ve had a chance to experience some of these tools ourselves in our daily lives. For instance, with ChatGPT, an advanced and exponentially popular AI chatbot, and with AI image generators such as DALL-E and Midjourney. Now that we have had the opportunity to personally collaborate with AI through image, text and audio generating tools, ethical and socio-political questions have started to surface about what it means to co-create with AI. How will these advancements in AI technologies reshape and reconfigure our daily lives? During this special evening it is time to reflect on AI and take on some new approaches to co-creation.

In-Between Media

The Covid pandemic has catalyzed experimental approaches to hybrid cultural programming and togetherness, mixing online, offline, and everything in-between. How can we translate the lessons learned into ways of dealing with post-pandemic urgencies? Can we use hybrid tactics in response to violent displacement, physical impairments, and the war in Ukraine? What kind of tactical media can exist within these (new) digital spaces, and which potential for resistance do they have? Data and information used as a tool for power might not be new, but some of the strategies being looked at in this conference—hopefully—are.

Memes Beyond Images

The (political) power of memes has moved beyond virtual images. The distinction between the virtual and “real life” no longer applies, or perhaps was never really there. Their effects (or should we say affects) are moving through digital infrastructures, policy, regulations and bodies. If memes are used as a tool by the alt-right to mobilize people to storm the Capitol and play a substantial role in the Ukrainian war, can they also be used by the left to spark a revolution, as memetic warfare is more immediate and accessible than real-life demonstrations? What kind of labor would that require? What kind of tools and principles would we need? And what if memetic logics of spreading information were applied to spread progressive ideas for a possible future?

The European Internet Blockade of Russian Propagandist Media

Against the backdrop of the war with Ukraine, the Russian government has sharply increased funding for state media, resulting in an unprecedented level of state propaganda spread on social media platforms. As a consequence, US and EU lawmakers and Ukrainian officials have jolted into action by pressuring social media platforms in an attempt to curb Russian misinformation. This seems to be a watershed moment with regard to freedom of the press and internet freedom. We discuss what is at stake with internet activists and journalists directly involved in war-news production.

Dromen van post-precariteit

De cultuursector van de toekomst, hoe zou die eruit kunnen zien? In gesprek met kunstenaars, ontwerpers, onderzoekers en docenten verkennen we mogelijke scenario’s. De urgenties zijn overduidelijk: sociale onveiligheid, teruglopende bezoekersaantallen en een slecht functionerende arbeidsmarkt. Praten over falen is niet vanzelfsprekend in onze maatschappij, zeker niet als ondernemer, terwijl er toch genoeg misgaat bij (jonge) ondernemingen, helemaal tijdens de coronapandemie. Project Fenix verkent wat er mis kan gaan, en wat we kunnen leren van verhalen over falen en het delen van die ervaringen. In dit programma gaan de initiatiefnemers van Project Fenix in gesprek met ondernemers en beleidsmakers over falende ondernemingen en hoe ze er weer bovenop komen.

Leather grown from fungi and textile dye produced by bacteria are two examples of applications of microbiology that are finding their way into the design field. Designers explore the expressiveness of such new materials through design interventions that can change our attitudes to finite (petrochemical) and/or toxic materials.

Bloedspetters, vingerafdrukken en DNA: het is dagelijkse kost voor forensisch onderzoekers, ook in Amsterdam. De praktijk verschilt echter nogal van wat series als Dexter ons voorschotelen. In dit programma onderzoeken we de interactie tussen politiemensen en onderzoekers bij het oplossen van misdrijven.

Alleen al in Amsterdam lijden 80 duizend mensen onder eenzaamheid. Landelijk ligt dit aantal rond de 1,6 miljoen. Aan de vooravond van de Week tegen Eenzaamheid onderzoeken we het gevoel niet verbonden te zijn met anderen, en kijken we naar de rol van netwerken in dit gemis.
